“Intolerable Act of Betrayal”- statement of the AINDF from the 1980s on Hungary

“Intolerable Act of Betrayal”

NDFSK issues statement on Budapest’s decision to exchange permanent missions

The Central Committee of the National Democratic Front of South Korea made public on September 25 a statement in connection with Budapest’s decision to exchange permanent missions at ambassadorial level with the Roh Tae-woo military government.
Here is the full text of the statement.

As was already reported the Hungarian government and the Roh Tae-woo military government agreed to exchange permanent missions at ambassadorial level with diplomatic privileges and immunities and reached an agreement on holding talks to establish diplomatic relations.
Budapest’s decision which was made after a series of secret talks with the Roh Tae-woo junta means that the Hungarian regime will recognize the colonial and military dictatorship as a “legitimate government” and will have official political relations with it.
Budapest’s action is an unbearable and intolerable act of betrayal, because our people have been fighting against the US colonial and military rule, shedding blood.
The south Korean people are now feeling strong indignation toward the Hungarian authorities for their inconceivable action.
The Roh Tae-woo military government with which the Hungarian authorities seek to have official political relations is a major enemy in our people's struggle for national salvation.
The Roh Tae-woo military government is a colonial puppet regime framed by Washington and is a military and fascist regime which is not qualified to belong to the world community of nations.
Because of the US occupation of south Korea and its colonial fascist rule, our nation had to live in our own land as a slave of a foreign country and as a prisoner of the dictatorships for half a century, deprived of civil rights.
We also had to suffer from the national tragedy, the division of the country, and we have been faced with nuclear danger resulting from the East-West confrontation.
In order to free ourselves from this unfortunate predicament, we have waged, over the past 40 years, a sacred struggle against US imperialism and the fascist rule under the banner of independence, democracy and reunification.
This course was really an arduous course which produces countless martyrs.
However, we overcame all the hardships and difficulties, believing we will win the final victory, without being swayed or disappointed.
Our people's unabated struggle against imperialism and fascist rule has always received active support and encouragement from the fighting peoples and progressive peoples the world over because of the justness of our cause.
Their support and encouragement greatly helped our people raise the fighting spirit.
Originally, socialist countries have given selfless support to our people fighting imperialism.
How can Hungary shake hands with our enemy?
How can this socialist country betray our people?
It is hardly believable that a socialist regime can do such a thing.
Countries which have won a victory in their national liberation struggles have obligations to give support and encouragement to those who have not won victory.
This is a noble international duty.
In particular, socialist Hungary is a country which knew the true meaning of international support and encouragement better than most countries.
Hungary managed to liberate itself from fascist rule with the support and encouragement from the countries which had previously won liberation and introduced a socialist system.
From its own experiences and lessons, Hungary is in a position to show sympathy with and give active support and encouragement to our people who have not won the struggle against imperialism and the fascist rule.
Despite all this, the Hungarian authorities are attempting to shake hands with the enemy of our people, throwing away elementary conscience and moral obligation and openly challenging our people's cause.
Hungary’s decision to recognize the Roh Tae-woo military government, a lackey of the US imperialists, is nothing different from the act of the reactionary powers who recognized the Horthw fascist regime, a puppet regime of Nazi Germany and a “democratic government” in the early 1940s.
We can only say that Budapest’s action reflects its support for the colonial fascist rule of the US imperialists and the Roh Tae-woo group with their “two Koreas” policy.
The action creates a stumbling block to our way towards independence, democracy and reunification.
The decision of Hungary to establish state relations with the Roh Tae-woo military dictatorship alienates it from our people who are waging the struggle for national liberation and against imperialism.
Are the Hungarian authorities on the side of the oppressors or the oppressed?
Are they for the national liberation struggle or against it?
These questions must be asked.
The Hungarian authorities must answer these questions before our people and the world public, first of all.
Socialist Hungary is in a position to demonstrate the beauty of the advanced socialist system and defend the dignity and authority of socialism as it became a socialist country after a bloody struggle.
Budapest’s decision to establish a permanent mission in colonial south Korea for financial reasons is not only an act of disgracing socialism but also an act of disappointing our fighting people.
Hungary’s decision can only be construed as a grave breach of faith whereby she abandoned her class stand as a socialist state faced with pressure and temptation from the reactionary forces of imperialism.
The shameless act of the Hungarian authorities can be equated with the opportunistic act of Imre Nagy who sold out the socialist cause of the Hungarian people faced with the reactionary offensive of US imperialism.
In the century-old international communist movement, we have unfortunate records of turncoats and traitors who surrendered to the imperialists, betraying the cause of the working class.
However, we have not seen anybody who discarded the ideal of socialism and shook hands with a puppet regime of the modern imperialists who speak about anti-communism in the harshest of words.
Budapest’s decision is a turnabout which will not only leave a stain on the international communist movement but also represent a great shame in the history of the Hungarian people.
In an attempt to justify their action the Hungarian authorities say that their decision does not run counter to internationalism and reflects their “bold ideas” drawn from an “analysis of the changing situation in south Korea”.
How can the Hungarian communist authorities use the same pretext and share the same views with the US imperialists and their puppet Roh Tae-woo?
It is we, the south Korean people, who can analyze the south Korean situation best, not Hungary situated in East Europe.
We cannot witness any change in the situation of the Korean Peninsula.
The colonial system established by the US imperialists remains intact in south Korea.
Although the Olympic Games were held in south Korean, this does not mean that south Korea has changed to a sovereign country from a colony.
Although Roh Tae-woo was elected president through a direct election, this does not mean that the military fascist regime has changed to a democratic government.
Although Roh talks about “peace” and “open-door policy”, this does not mean that the root cause of nuclear war has been eliminated from the Korean Peninsula.
South Korea is still under a colonial and military rule and the danger of nuclear war is hanging over the country.
The country is in danger of being divided permanently.
Our people are asking, “Why can’t the Hungarian authorities see the reality of this country? They only see a $500 million loan.”
The NDFSK and our people cannot but be worried about the dangerous thinking of the Hungarian authorities who discarded their faith in socialism to get a few dollars and worried about the grave consequences of their decision.
The Hungarian authorities who discarded their revolutionary faith by shaking hands with our enemy should not think that they can land on our country with ease.
There is no room for the turncoats and traitors to the struggle of our people and for the Hungarian people in south Korea where fierce struggles against the US and for independence are going on.
We will never allow the Hungarian authorities to establish a permanent mission in south Korea to have political relations with the enemy of our people who are engaged in the struggle against US imperialism and the fascist rule and for national salvation.
We don’t want the slogan of “Hungarians, go home” to be heard along with “Yankees, go home” nor do we want the national flag of Hungary to be burnt along with the Stars and Stripes in the future.
The NDFSK and our people will turn our hatred for and indignation at the Hungarian authorities’ action to the courage, and continue our struggle against US imperialism and the military dictatorship aimed at independence, democracy and reunification in high spirit.
It is historically inevitable that US imperialism’s colonial and military rule over south Korea should collapse and our people's cause for independence triumph.
The Hungarian authorities shook hands with the colonial and military dictators, but they will have to apologize to our people for their crime when our people achieve victory.
We strongly urge the Hungarian government to cancel the unjustifiable decision which will create a stumbling block to the patriotic movement of the south Korean people, before they are deeply caught in a trap set by the colonialists.

NDFSK Statement on Hungarian Mission

The Central Committee of the National Democratic Front of South Korea made public a statement on September 25, protesting against the unjust attempt of the Hungarian government to establish official state relations with the Roh Tae-woo military government, a target of denunciation of our people, and demanding the immediate withdrawal of this decision.
But the Hungarian rulers, despite our advice, persistently try to open a permanent mission of ambassadorial level in Seoul within this month and announce it as a “first step” toward the establishment of state relations.
We of the NDFSK, strongly condemning, together with the entire people, this surprising act of the Hungarian government authorities, clarify once again our opinion of protest reflecting the will of our people.
1. The opening of the Seoul permanent mission of the Hungarian government is an intolerable hostile act against our people fighting against the colonial fascist rule.

2. The opening of the Seoul permanent mission of the Hungarian government is a criminal act doing harm to our people's sacred cause of reunification.

3. The opening of the Seoul permanent mission of the Hungarian government is a betrayal to Marxism-Leninism and socialism.

4. The Hungarian permanent mission in Seoul will be a target of our people's anti-Hungarian struggle.
